I went to help my brother’s wife to buy her
baby's food one evening, and as I got to the shop where I was to buy the item, I met two women by the roadside from
different religious backgrounds arguing. The bone of contention was whether Christians should celebrate Christmas or not. What struck me
most was the response of the woman arguing in favor of celebrating
Christmas. The only thing she had to tell her contender was that her
General Overseer, who, according to her, is a big man of God and is high
spiritually, celebrates it, and therefore it is the right thing to do.
Her General Overseer could not be wrong, and if he says it is right,
then it is, and until he says something else, she would hold on to it. Imagine? How could a believer and a Christian not know reason for celebrating Christmas? So if her GO stops the celebration tomorrow then she sees no reason? Lets dig deep on our faith as Christians and know what the liturgy says about every liturgical and Christian celebrations.
It really did hurt my heart to hear a so-called Christian not being able
to defend her belief with a personal conviction, but more hurting was
the realization that came afterwards that that is exactly the state of
an outrageous large number of Christians.
It was God who made provision for the position of pastors and teachers
in the body of Christ by giving such gifts to some men through Christ.
And in the Old Testament He talked severally on Shepherds over His
flock, which is significant of these pastors and teachers in the Church,
who are supposed to feed the flock – the people – with the right food –
the Word of God, to bring about growth in the knowledge of God and
enhance walk with God. Hence, it is not out of place that people will
get to know some things about God through what others have to say about
Him. But then, however true and sound the teachings we receive from
others about God are, they are not by themselves enough for us to base
our Christian life on them alone. Though it is quite unfortunate that
that is exactly what is happening in the Church today.
So, instead of sitting down with our arms folded, and over depending on these ones for every of our spiritual need, we should rise up and seek God too for our self and by our self, not only so that we can really grow, but also so that we will be able to stand our grounds, help others grow too, and even know when they are getting things wrong and be able to refuse following them through those wrong paths.
