ABUJA: 26 MARCH, 2015
As
the momentum gathers towards this year’s general elections and with the
expected massive human and vehicular movement across the country by
people to cast their votes, the Federal Road Safety Corps has deployed
20,000 personnel and 413 patrol vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks
along designated routes of the highways in its efforts to collaborate
with other security agencies to ensure sanity on the nation’s highways
throughout the duration of the elections.
Since the elections are
in 2 phases of 28th March 2015 for Presidential and National Assembly
and 11 April 2015 for Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections, the
Corps has also drawn a road map towards effective patrolling of
designated routes of the highways, in addition to prompt rescue services
and public enlightenment campaigns, as part of measures to engender
best road safety practices among road users.
This is in
addition to the Corps’ 24 emergency ambulance response centres located
at designated routes across the country in the FCT, Kaduna, Gombe,
Jigawa, Taraba, Niger, Kogi, Ondo, Edo, Osun, Nasarawa, Plateau and
Kwara states.
Deriving from this, motorists are hereby
enjoined to ensure proper planning and management of trips through
maintenance of their vehicles and compliance with traffic rules and
regulations.
Pursuant to this, motorists and other
categories of road users are strictly warned to desist from all road
vices such as overloading, speed limit violation, non-use of seat belt,
route violation (driving against traffic), making/receiving calls while
driving and night trips.
Details of the objectives of this special
exercise include the removal of obstructions from the highways, traffic
control/decongestion, public enlightenment campaigns.
In
the same vein, road users are strictly advised to desist from night
trips and to ensure that vehicles which ply the highways conform with
safety standard such as functional head/tail lights, wipers, tyres, fire
extinguisher, caution sign and non-defective windscreen.
Meanwhile,
the motoring public is reminded to call the FRSC toll free emergency
number 122 and 070022553772 to report any traffic crash or any other
traffic-related challenges, for prompt response.
